St Kilda Brass is a B Grade brass band which has a very successful concert series, comprising three concerts every year. As well as a concert series the band also successfully competes regularly in the New Zealand National Brass Band Championships, the Otago/Southland Provincial Contests and has competed in the Australian National Championships several times with excellent results.

The band has a very long history, and it is also the only band in New Zealand to have maintained A Grade status since 1906 until 2024. St Kilda Brass plays an important function in the musical culture of Dunedin and of the Otago Region. Membership is made up of some of this country’s best musicians who range in age from high school pupils to retirees.

Events

Concert Series

Every year St Kilda Brass offers a series of concerts, each exploring different themes and showcasing the band’s various talents. The band has performed New Zealand premieres of several new works, and often joins with other local and national artists, making each concert a truly unique occasion not to be missed.

Contests

St Kilda Brass attends an annual national contest, hosted somewhere different in the country every year. Here it competes against other A Grade bands, who each perform a sacred item, a test piece and an own choice piece. There is also a street march, and several soloists and ensembles usually participate in their respective events. St Kilda and its individual members have a history of great results at these events, likewise at provincial contests, and have even achieved success in Australia.
